But this draft/original cut of the film was over 2 hours long, so a lot of scenes had to be trimmed to 88 minutes long. Detective Mike Norris was included to add more characters throughout the story and give him a connection to Charles Lee Ray. But Holland wanted to include a voodoo backstory for Charles so he could cast a spell to transfer his soul into the doll and his motivation to possess Andy. Originally, Charles was a prisoner who died from the death row, only to haunt a nearby toy store and possess a Good Guy doll. As by this point had concept art with him dressed in a long sleeve shirt, patched jeans, and a parted pixie haircut.)Įventually, Tom Holland came back as the director and took out many ideas from Lafia's rewrite. But while definitely an improvement, this version still just wasn't working. And not only gave Chucky his iconic Good Guy catchphrases, but was also responsible for Andy's badass line "This is the end, friend" at the ending.Īndy was at one point gonna be renamed MARTIN before it was averted back, and was rewritten to be more of an innocent kid who's a victim of circumstances instead of making him an unlikeable kid with sickening violent thoughts. And added "Lee Ray" for Charlie's full name. Lafia was responsible for giving the doll's name, CHUCKY, to co-aside with Charles as a nickname. It had a lot more backstory for Andy and his Mother: such as what happened to the father, why they were struggling, etc. And it was this much needed change in direction and elevated the character and story. ![]() John Lafia was hired for further rewrites. Buddy was renamed to CHARLES, Susan was renamed to Karen but was still a CEO of the toy company and the mastermind of the Good Guy doll toyline. ![]() ![]() The next version had rewrites from director Tom Holland. ![]()
